The Lady and the Laird Scottish Brides Nicola Cornick 9780373777419 Books

This book is the first of three stories about sisters...each of the women can be easily be identified to any number of women sans the personal backgrounds- being daughters born in the Georgian era, in the Scottish highlands and daughters of a Duke. It is their personal stories and how they interact[or don't interact] with each other, their personal weaknesses, strengths, fears and dreams. The first sister is the youngest-a surviving "eldest" twin who at 16, lost; at the death of her sister; her best friend & confidant, and as the eldest carries the burden of feeling responsible for her younger sister's unexpected death. As a young adult she retreats into her own world, "experiences life" through reading books, denies the validity of emotions and omits considering possible consequences resulting from the reality that humans utilize her vehicle[written words] to earn money, as a way of dealing with the fears she experienced watching her sister die and being unable to prevent the death.Still in her "own world", she becomes entangled with a hero, that for his own reasons and life experience, functions the same way. Together they struggle, manipulate, "bargain" and rediscover their long dormant humanity, love of life and each other. It is a "can't put it down" read with a lot of "oooh" twists and plot turns, but on the down side, can be rather heartrending if the circumstances reflect aspects of the reader's real life. Ms Cornick understands the finer nuances of emotions, human interactions and I love her dialogues and "real life" characterizations that transcend time, culture and social status. I became aware, while reading, that about half way through each story, that I was picking up clues about what the next book would entail so that was really fun, but it requires that the books be read in order.

The Lady and the Laird Scottish Brides Nicola Cornick 9780373777419 Books Reviews

I loved Christina and Lucas. I thought they were perfect together.

Ms Cornick writes a very good story. She was able to make me feel the emotions. I felt the love, lust, betrayal, confusion and anger as if I was living them myself. In my experience it is rare for me to be drawn in so emotionally and for that I would give this book 5 stars.

The reason I decided 4 stars instead of 5 is because if the ending. It was so rushed and so anticlimactic that I felt cheated. There is also a secondary romance in the book involving Christina's niece - which in my opinion added nothing to the story and was just filler material. I was waiting for a big reveal and again was left wanting.

This is the end of the trilogy - but there was no epilogue and I didn't feel like Lucas got the closure he needed. We know Lachlan runs away to the continent - but we don't know what his motivation was or what happens to him.

So bottom line, this could have been the best book in the trilogy, the writing was superb and the plot was interesting. But the ending ruined the book for me. Perhaps if I hadn't been so emotionally invested I would have been happy with the ending. But, since I was so drawn into this book, I felt disappointed instead. I would recommend the trilogy but I wouldn't consider this book a keeper.
This is going to be a difficult review to write but I'll have a go. Firstly I love the way this author writes. She creates settings and people that are easy to imagine. I thoroughly enjoyed the first book, The Lady and the Laird, but never read the second in the series as it sounded a bit 'modern' for me. This third in the series about 3 sisters, who are daughters of a Duke, is about the eldest, spinster sister. She appears to have given up on having her own life in favour of bringing up her younger siblings. She is also involved in pretty much running her father's estate because the old Duke isn't interested. Everyone seems to take her and what she does for them for granted.

The thing is that it isn't easy reading about the elderly, spinster sister without feeling a huge amount of pity. I don't like pitying my hs, I want to admire them and although she possesses many admirable qualities, the reasons to feel sorry for outweigh them. The h wasn't mentioned much in the first book as it was more about the younger, beautiful sisters. Our H is an admirable character in that she is kind and caring and loving but not particularly attractive. We don't know her age but it seems like she must be around her mid-thirties and the H is about 6 years younger. The H is the illegitimate son of a Russian princess and a Scottish Laird. He has chosen not to live the life of a noble and has made a very successful career in business without the help of anyone.

In this story he wants to find out how his young Russian half-brother was murdered. They'd only just met and were working out the details of getting to know each other after all the years of estrangement. Fingers point to the h's family in the murder as well as a whiskey smuggling ring. The H goes under cover for the British government, who want to dismantle the smuggling ring, as a servant on the H's estate. The main characters meet when the smugglers catch the H snooping around and the h insists that they free him. She is heading up the smuggling ring.

The story is interesting and intriguing and there is never a dull moment. The h is very attracted to the H despite him being a servant. There is the inevitable misunderstanding and separation but the H was an honourable character. I just have to say that the more we learnt about the h's background, the more my heart broke for her and I pitied her.

+++Spoilers+++
I had to deal with the added aggravation of this being a 'modern' historical as these two inevitably have a physical relationship despite the H's concerns about siring a bast**d. The separation is fairly long because the h is involved with her activities with the smugglers and is detained as a result but no mention is made of her possible condition. You'd think I'd move past this kind of sub-plot being annoying but yet it still bugs me.

It was a good book with a good story, I just wish I'd felt less sorry for the h all the time.
