I am an avid fan of "Twilight Zone - esque" fiction that causes the reader to really think and consider other possibilities. This collection of stories has really been a great read, and is filled with thoughtful takes on reality, as well as some great plot twists and unexpected endings!

Sometimes I'd feel a bit frustrated when a story ended "too soon", because I wanted to know more! However, this is a good sign that the author pulls you in to each little world, making you care and want to learn more.

"Inner Life" was quite brilliant, and probably the crown jewel out of all of the other riches in this collection. Don't let the low price or simple title discourage your from buying this collection. You will not regret it!!

If there was an author new to the world of publishing that I would place next to Ray Bradbury, Edgar Allan Poe, and Isaac Asimov, it would be Michael K. Rose. His collection Short Stories was not only entertaining, it was filling from both a philosophical as well as emotional viewpoint. It was at times dark, light and colorful. It was sound in element, true to form and at no time did I think to myself "That's it?"

Short Stories is not only thought-provoking, it is the purest form of literature, as rich as a bottle of Montrachet 1978 and as tasty as a generous cut of Wagyu beef.

Rose's style reminds me of two authors in particular Poe and Bradbury. I mention this because I so immersed myself in their work when I was younger, I thought there could never be an equal. Perhaps in time, Rose's work will sit high on the shelf with these two greats. For now, though, his work sits on MY shelf along with the best the world of literature has seen.
Sadly this is less of an anthology book and more of a "hey, buy my other books" according to my father who I bought it for as a present. Bit bummed, as I thought my father would enjoy it
A very enjoyable read for those who like short stories. Well worth the purchase for a few hours relaxation. Interesting and quirky.
I was looking for inspiration, i often will go to SCI FI when i am looking for something to draw and i am glad i came here. I just finished Forever War so i am having a hard time making the transfer to this type of author but i am slowly opening up a bit.
Every time I read something by Michael K. Rose I remember why I like it, his clean prose and his inventive. If you are a fan of science fiction or horror, this collection of short novellas, in part available on their own, is all you need to spend a few hours of good reading. Everyone will find something for his taste. Be assured that after finishing The Vast Expanse Beyond you'll be hooked and you'll want more!
I have found that short stories are just the thing for times when I can't get tied up in a novel (like when I'm cooking dinner). If you are a Sci-Fi fan, this collection is a great little time-burner. After each story is a little snippet from Rose giving his thoughts, which are always interesting.

My favorite is INNER LIFE. Imagine if it were true - that there were infinite variations of ourselves across dimensions.
Michael K. Rose delivers with this collection of 10 otherworldly tales. You have an adventurous prequel, "Sergeant Riley's Account" to his Sullivan's War series, a thriller called, "Sleep" that I can only describe as Edgar Allan Poe in space, "If I Profane With My Unworthiest Hand" a story about an old man who just likes to smoke his pipe and work on his inventions and his religious wife who questions his invention that essentially can make someone immortal when it interferes with her beliefs, and "A Random Selection" a tale about an alien vistor choosing an ordinary man to follow around and learn more about the human race, deciding their fate, and much MUCH more! Michael K. Rose is a great new writer and I look forward to more of his work.
